What Gear Do I Need?

When you're first starting out, you don't need the complete package right away.  Check out the required gear for each program in the chart below.

Protective Gear is for more advanced students (Orange Belts and Above), which is why it is listed as Optional.

Items that are recommended are exactly, that:  recommended!  Meaning, we will use these items more than once and will be called upon randomly, such has focus mitts.  You can borrow any spare training equipment, but it is recommended to get our own for sanitary reasons.

What Gi Do I Wear?

It can be confusing what gi would be ideal for the martial art you're doing.
If you're just starting out, we sell lightweight karate gi's for kids, especially if they're just trying it out to start.  This keeps the cost down.  Karate gi's are not ideal for competitive training, but work just fine for smaller kids trying out jiu-jitsu.  They will last about a year.  Usually because your child has grown so quickly.

*Please inquire about our selection of used gi's at the front desk.

Teens and Adults:  given the nature of jiu-jitsu (the pushing, pulling, grappling, and throws/breakfalls), a Karate gi will not last very long.  We strongly recommend one of our Judo gi's or compeitive Jiu-Jitsu gi's.  They will last you or your teen a lot longer, plus it is a thicker material that covers all the bases for jiu-jitsu training.

If you want to wear a gi from another school, that's fine.  We just can't accept the Tae Kwon Do gi.  It's too light weight for what we do.

Sizes for gi's are usually by height and weight (and factoring in their age, if it's a child).  Let us know the height/weight and we will send you some choices.  They can be tried on at the dojo.

BJJ:  A proper jiu-jitsu gi is strongly recommended + BJJ Belt.

What Do I Wear Underneath?

Definitely a sports t-shirt, tank top, or ideally a rashguard or moisture-wicking material top.  You're welcome to wear tights under the pants, but it's not necessary.  You know what's necessary?  Underwear!
Laugh if you will, but we have seen it all!
Ladies:  please do not wear bikini's tops under your gi top.  Again, we've seen it all!

For Kickboxing:  tights and top or shorts and tshirt is totally fine.  Let's avoid the booty shorts ladies (or should I say teens).  We've seen those too and while it's nice to stand still in, it's just not appropriate for those high kicks, unless you want to be picking wedgies out the whole class.  Save them for the beach!

What are the handwraps for?

They can be great protectors of multiple things:  impact, yes.  They protect your wrist and encourage a straighter punch, as well as protecting the knuckle area.  They also just FEEL good on.  But also sweat:  they protect your gloves from getting wet and retaining a smell.  For only $15 per pair, it's well-worth having many in your arsenal.  Grab a few!

Why is Headgear optional?

Well, technically the headgear is mandatory for sparring.  But since we're not offering those classes, it's not something we require.  Headgear is meant to protect against intentional strikes to the head, but we don't do that much in the beginning stages.  Those will be reserved for experienced players.  And we'll talk to you about it when the time comes.

Why are the gloves measured in ounces?

The ounces refers to the weight of the bulb at the top of your hand, where the fingers curl inside.  The lower the weight, the more you will feel the punch, so for bag work, ideal gloves are 8-10 oz, but we say 10oz, so we can use them for other things like focus mitts.  The higher the weight, the more cushion for you and your partner.  Not ideal for the bag because you won't feel that nice impact you're supposed to feel when hitting the bag.  We recommend 10-12 oz, no higher.  14oz is great for sparring only.

Gear can be purchased at the Front Desk (and soon, online).

Uploading a photo of yourself or your child

Hi friends!

When uploading a photo, please make it a photo where we can see the face clearly, as this will help with remembering names when we get busy in the future.

Please avoid non-human photos, although very pretty and we love your expression, keep in mind that we have a large student body and we need to know who's who for class attendance.  It just helps the instructors.

And unlike government ID's WE WANT TO SEE THAT SMILE!
